What They May Not See

A third census of the same tribe on a third set of rules — thirty to fifty, a working roster with one of the Bible’s few retirement ages. Then the chapter becomes a packing manual: the veil comes down to wrap the ark, five more bundles follow, and the outermost layer everywhere is a leather nobody can now identify. The Kohathites who carry the ark may not touch it, and by verse 20 may not watch it being wrapped.

Chapter 5 →

1And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,

3From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

4This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:

5And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:

6And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.

7And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:

8And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.

9And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:

10And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put it upon a bar.

11And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:

12And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins, and shall put them on a bar:

13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:

14And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers’ skins, and put to the staves of it.

15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

16And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.

17And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

18Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:

19But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:

20But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

21And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

22Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families;

23From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.

24This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:

25And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,

26And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.

27At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.

28This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;

30From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.

31And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,

32And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.

33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

34And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

35From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation:

36And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

37These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

38And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers,

39From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,

40Even those that were numbered of them, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

41These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the Lord.

42And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers,

43From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,

44Even those that were numbered of them after their families, were three thousand and two hundred.

45These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

46All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

47From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation,

48Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

49According to the commandment of the Lord they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the Lord commanded Moses.

1Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

2"Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' houses,

3from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all who enter into the service to do the work in the Tent of Meeting.

4"This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting, regarding the most holy things.

5When the camp moves forward, Aaron shall go in with his sons; and they shall take down the veil of the screen, cover the ark of the Testimony with it,

6put a covering of sealskin on it, spread a blue cloth over it, and put in its poles.

7"On the table of show bread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the spoons, the bowls, and the cups with which to pour out; and the continual bread shall be on it.

8They shall spread on them a scarlet cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles.

9"They shall take a blue cloth and cover the lamp stand of the light, its lamps, its snuffers, its snuff dishes, and all its oil vessels, with which they minister to it.

10They shall put it and all its vessels within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it on the frame.

11"On the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in its poles.

12"They shall take all the vessels of ministry with which they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame.

13"They shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth on it.

14They shall put on it all its vessels with which they minister about it, the fire pans, the meat hooks, the shovels, and the basins—all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of sealskin, and put in its poles.

15"When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp moves forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to carry it; but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. The sons of Kohath shall carry these things belonging to the Tent of Meeting.

16"The duty of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, the sweet incense, the continual meal offering, and the anointing oil, the requirements of all the tabernacle, and of all that is in it, the sanctuary, and its furnishings."

17Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

18"Don't cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites;

19but do this to them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint everyone to his service and to his burden;

20but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die."

21Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

22"Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses, by their families;

23you shall count them from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old: all who enter in to wait on the service, to do the work in the Tent of Meeting.

24"This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens:

25they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the Tent of Meeting, its covering, the covering of sealskin that is on it, the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting,

26the hangings of the court, the screen for the door of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle and around the altar, their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatever shall be done with them. They shall serve in there.

27At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden and in all their service; and you shall appoint their duty to them in all their responsibilities.

28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the Tent of Meeting. Their duty shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29"As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers' houses;

30you shall count them from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old—everyone who enters on the service, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting.

31This is the duty of their burden, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the tabernacle's boards, its bars, its pillars, its sockets,

32the pillars of the court around it, their sockets, their pins, their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service. You shall appoint the instruments of the duty of their burden to them by name.

33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the Tent of Meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest."

34Moses and Aaron and the princes of the congregation counted the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

35from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered into the service for work in the Tent of Meeting.

36Those who were counted of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred fifty.

37These are those who were counted of the families of the Kohathites, all who served in the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

38Those who were counted of the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by their fathers' houses,

39from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old—everyone who entered into the service for work in the Tent of Meeting,

40even those who were counted of them, by their families, by their fathers' houses, were two thousand six hundred thirty.

41These are those who were counted of the families of the sons of Gershon, all who served in the Tent of Meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted according to the commandment of Yahweh.

42Those who were counted of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers' houses,

43from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old—everyone who entered into the service for work in the Tent of Meeting,

44even those who were counted of them by their families, were three thousand two hundred.

45These are those who were counted of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron counted according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.

46All those who were counted of the Levites whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel counted, by their families and by their fathers' houses,

47from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, everyone who entered in to do the work of service and the work of bearing burdens in the Tent of Meeting,

48even those who were counted of them, were eight thousand five hundred eighty.

49According to the commandment of Yahweh they were counted by Moses, everyone according to his service and according to his burden. Thus they were counted by him, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

1And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ houses,

48even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

49According to the commandment of Jehovah they were numbered by Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

1And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, and unto Aaron, saying,

2`Take up the sum of the sons of Kohath from the midst of the sons of Levi, by their families, by the house of their fathers;

3from a son of thirty years and upward, even till a son of fifty years, every one going in to the host, to do work in the tent of meeting.

4`This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, the holy of holies:

5that Aaron and his sons have come in, in the journeying of the camp, and have taken down the vail of the hanging, and have covered with it the ark of the testimony;

6and have put on it a covering of badger skin, and have spread a garment completely of blue above, and have placed its staves.

7`And on the table of the presence they spread a garment of blue, and have put on it the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and the cups of the libation, and the bread of continuity is on it,

8and they have spread over them a garment of scarlet, and have covered it with a covering of badger skin, and have placed its staves,

9and have taken a garment of blue, and have covered the candlestick of the lamp, and its lights, and its snuffers, and its snuff-dishes, and all its oil vessels wherewith they minister to it;

10and they have put it and all its vessels unto a covering of badger skin, and have put it on the bar.

11`And on the golden altar they spread a garment of blue, and have covered it with a covering of badger skin, and have placed its staves;

12and have taken all the vessels of ministry wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and have put them unto a garment of blue, and have covered them with a covering of badger skin, and have put them on the bar,

13and have removed the ashes of the altar, and have spread over it a garment of purple;

14and have put on it all its vessels wherewith they minister about it, the censers, the hooks, and the shovels, and the bowls, all the vessels of the altar, and have spread on it a covering of badger skin, and have placed its staves:

15`And Aaron hath finished--his sons also--covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, in the journeying of the camp, and afterwards do the sons of Kohath come in to bear it, and they do not come unto the holy thing, that they have died; these things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.

16`And the oversight of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, is the oil of the lamp, and the spice-perfume, and the present of continuity, and the anointing oil, the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that is in it, in the sanctuary, and in its vessels.'

17And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

18`Ye do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathite from the midst of the Levites;

19but this do to them, and they have lived, and do not die in their drawing nigh the holy of holies: --Aaron and his sons go in, and have set them, each man to his service, and unto his burden,

20and they go not in to see when the holy thing is swallowed, that they have died.'

21And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

22`Take up the sum of the sons of Gershon also by the house of their fathers, by their families;

23from a son of thirty years and upward, till a son of fifty years thou dost number them, every one who is going in to serve the host, to do the service in the tent of meeting.

24`This is the service of the families of the Gershonite, to serve--and for burden,

25and they have borne the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of the badger skin which is on it above, and the vail at the opening of the tent of meeting,

26and the hangings of the court, and the vail at the opening of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the vessels of their service, and all that is made for them--and they have served.

27`By the command of Aaron and his sons is all the service of the sons of the Gershonite in all their burden, and in all their service; and ye have laid a charge on them concerning the charge of all their burden.

28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonite in the tent of meeting; and their charge is under the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.

29`The sons of Merari, by their families, by the house of their fathers, thou dost number them;

30from a son of thirty years and upward even unto a son of fifty years thou dost number them, every one who is going in to the host, to do the service of the tent of meeting.

31`And this is the charge of their burden, of all their service in the tent of meeting; the boards of the tabernacle, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets,

32and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, of all their vessels, and of all their service; and by name ye do number the vessels of the charge of their burden.

33`This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, for all their service, in the tent of meeting, by the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.'

34And Moses numbereth--Aaron also, and the princes of the company--the sons of the Kohathite, by their families, and by the house of their fathers,

35from a son of thirty years and upward even unto a son of fifty years, every one who is going in to the host, for service in the tent of meeting,

36and their numbered ones, by their families, are two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

37These are those numbered of the families of the Kohathite, every one who is serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, by the command of Jehovah, by the hand of Moses.

38And those numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families, and by the house of their fathers,

39from a son of thirty years and upward even unto a son of fifty years, every one who is going in to the host, for service in the tent of meeting,

40even their numbered ones, by their families, by the house of their fathers, are two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

41These are those numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, every one who is serving in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered by the command of Jehovah.

42And those numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by the house of their fathers,

43from a son of thirty years and upward even unto a son of fifty years, every one who is going in to the host, for service in the tent of meeting,

44even their numbered ones, by their families, are three thousand and two hundred.

45These are those numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, by the command of Jehovah, by the hand of Moses.

46All those numbered, whom Moses numbered--Aaron also, and the princes of Israel--of the Levites, by their families, and by the house of their fathers,

47from a son of thirty years and upward even unto a son of fifty years, every one who is going in to do the work of the service, even the service of burden in the tent of meeting,

48even their numbered ones are eight thousand and five hundred and eighty;

49by the command of Jehovah hath one numbered them, by the hand of Moses, each man by his service, and by his burden, with his numbered ones, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
