Men who have handled a corpse come to Moses with a question rather than an excuse: wherefore are we kept back? They accept that they are unclean; they object that obeying one rule should lock them out of another. Moses does not know the answer, and refers it upward. The ruling gives them a second Passover one month later, and adds an exemption nobody asked for. Then the chapter changes subject and watches a cloud.
