Waved Before the Lord

Four verses on the lamps, then the strangest ceremony in the book. The Levites are sprinkled, shaved over their whole bodies, and made to wash their clothes. Israel lays hands on them — the gesture a worshipper makes on a burnt offering — and Aaron then waves them, using the technical verb of the wave offering on twenty-two thousand people. Verse 19 says what it is for: they stand between Israel and a plague.
