Amen, Amen

Three laws, and the third is the hardest passage in the book so far. The unclean are put outside the camp; restitution requires spoken confession and a fifth added. Then, from verse 11, the ordeal of the bitter water — the Torah’s only trial by ordeal, for a suspicion no witness can settle. The law says twice that it covers the case where she has done nothing. She speaks once in thirty-one verses, and her words are Amen, amen.
