Miriam dies at Kadesh and is buried there. The water runs out, the people turn against Moses and Aaron, and God tells Moses to speak to a rock. Moses strikes it twice instead. The water comes anyway, and both brothers are told they will not bring the people into the land. Moses then asks the king of Edom for passage along the king’s highway, promising to stay off the fields and pay for the water. Edom refuses, then refuses again, this time with an army. The camp turns away and climbs Mount Hor, where Aaron’s clothes are put on his son and Aaron dies on the summit. Israel weeps for him for thirty days.
