Seven days inside the tent door are over, and on the eighth Aaron functions as a priest for the first time. He offers for himself, then for the people, then lifts his hands and blesses them. Moses and Aaron go into the tent, come out, and bless the people again — and the glory of the LORD appears, and fire comes out from before the LORD and consumes the offering on the altar. The people shout and fall on their faces. Thirteen chapters of instruction in Exodus, six of construction, two of ordination: this is the moment it was all built for. The next sentence in the story — our chapter break is medieval — has fire come out from the same place and kill two of Aaron’s sons.
