Doing It Exactly

Everything Exodus 29 instructed, carried out. Aaron and his sons are washed, dressed, girded; the Urim and Thummim go into the breastpiece; oil is poured on Aaron’s head; a bull and two rams are killed; blood goes on the right ear, the right thumb and the right big toe. Seven times in this chapter the narrator says as the LORD commanded Moses. And the man performing all of it — slaughtering, sprinkling, burning, waving — is Moses, who is not a priest and is never called one. Somebody has to ordain the first priest, and by definition that person cannot have been ordained by one.
