The Right Thigh

The priests’ portions, itemized. The breast is waved and goes to Aaron’s sons collectively; the right thigh goes to the individual priest who handled the blood and the fat of that particular animal. KJV says right shoulder; WEB, ASV and YLT correct it to thigh or leg, which is what the Hebrew shoq means. That small disagreement is worth following, because it is one of the few ritual rules in the Hebrew Bible that archaeology can test — and at Tel Dan the bones in the priestly chamber run two-to-one right-sided while the bones in the courtyard run the other way. The chapter also puts a clock on the peace offering: eat it today, or by tomorrow, and burn what is left.
