Two things that do not obviously belong together. First the sanctuary furnishings: oil for a lamp that burns all night, and twelve cakes set out each sabbath. Then, without transition, a man with an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father curses the Name in a camp brawl, and nobody knows the penalty, so they hold him until an answer comes. Wedged between the ruling and the execution: eye for eye, and one law for the stranger and the native alike.
