Chapter 18 listed the prohibitions; this one attaches the penalties, and grades them — death by human hands, then karet, then bearing one’s iniquity, then childlessness. It opens on child sacrifice and closes on necromancy, and between them sits its strangest verse: a provision for what happens when the community hides its eyes and refuses to enforce any of it. There is no judge here, no court and no officer.
