Leviticus 18

Near of Kin

A list, worked outward from the household by degree of kinship, using one repeated formula more than twenty times: do not uncover the nakedness of. Mother, stepmother, sister and half-sister, granddaughter, aunt, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law. The chapter frames the whole thing geographically at both ends — do not do as they do in Egypt where you lived, or in Canaan where I am bringing you, and the land vomits out those who defile it, including you. Dropped into the middle is the Molech prohibition, and near the end the two verses that make this the most contested chapter in the book. On those, and on everything else here, TELL reports the Hebrew, the ancient legal context and what is genuinely open, and does not tell readers what to conclude.
