A Chapter Built in Pairs

Discharges, and the chapter is usually cited for one of its five sections. Read whole it is symmetrical: an abnormal male discharge, a normal male emission, intercourse defiling both parties, menstruation, an abnormal female discharge. The male material comes first and takes comparable space, and the two abnormal cases mirror each other clause for clause — same seven-day count after the flow stops, same washing, same closing offering of two birds. None of it is sin; there is no confession anywhere in it. And verse 31 states the point of the whole system: keep the people from defiling the tabernacle that is among them. These are rules about proximity to a sanctuary, not about anyone’s worth.
