Jacob leaves Beer-sheba alone, fleeing Esau. He stops for the night at an unnamed place, sleeps with stones for a pillow, and dreams of a staircase reaching to heaven with angels on it. God stands at the top and repeats the covenant. Jacob wakes terrified — surely the LORD is in this place, and I knew it not — sets the stone up as a pillar, names the place Bethel, and makes a conditional vow.
