God answers the complaint that ended chapter 5 with the densest run of promises in the book — seven first-person commitments in three verses, four of which Passover still drinks a cup of wine for. The people cannot take them in; the text says they were short of breath from cruel bondage, and assigns no blame for it. Then the narrative stops dead to run a genealogy — which turns out to be the answer, establishing who these two men are.
