Bricks Without Straw

Moses delivers the demand and it goes badly. Pharaoh’s counter-move is administrative rather than violent: keep the brick quota exactly where it is and stop supplying the straw. The chapter follows the order down through the ranks to the Israelite foremen, who are beaten when the numbers fall short, appeal to Pharaoh, get nowhere, and come out to curse Moses in the street. It ends with Moses telling God the mission has made everything worse.
