On the first day of the first month of the second year — one year to the day after the exodus — the tabernacle goes up. Moses sets out each item in order, and then the cloud covers the tent and the glory fills it, and he cannot get in. Six chapters of instructions and six of construction produce a building whose builder is shut out of it. Exodus ends with nobody in the land, no arrival, and instructions for taking the sanctuary down again.
