Exodus 33

Show Me Thy Glory

The consequence of the calf is not punishment but distance. God will keep the promise and send an angel, but will not go up in the midst of the people — lest I consume thee in the way. Moses will not accept the substitute. The chapter contains the most intimate sentence in the Torah about access to God — face to face, as a man speaks to his friend — and, nine verses later, the flat statement that no one can see God’s face and live.
