Drawn Out of the Water

Pharaoh has ordered every Hebrew boy thrown into the Nile, and the chapter answers by putting one there — sealed in a vessel called by the same rare word as Noah’s ark. Three women save the child and the text names none of them. Then it skips his entire youth in one clause, and the grown Moses kills a man; the Hebrew uses one verb for the Egyptian’s blow and for his. The chapter ends with four verbs: God heard, remembered, saw, and knew.
