Advice From a Midianite Priest

Moses’ father-in-law arrives with the wife and two sons Moses had sent away, and the chapter hands him a remarkable amount of authority. He presides over a sacrifice that Aaron and all the elders attend — a non-Israelite priest officiating, with no comment from the narrator. Then he watches Moses judge alone from dawn to dusk, tells him flatly that it is not good, and redesigns Israel’s judiciary. Moses adopts it wholesale.
