Israel is told to turn back and camp with water in front and Egypt behind — deliberately, so that Pharaoh will think them trapped. He does, and comes with six hundred chosen chariots. What follows is the most argued-over passage in the Hebrew Bible, and the chapter describes it twice in ways that do not quite match: a strong east wind drying the sea bed, and walls of water — chomah, the word for a city wall.
